KEEPING YOUR TOPS ON – LOG HOME TOPCOATS

While some folks may enjoy topless entertainment, when it comes to log homes…we say, “keep your tops on!”  Of course we are talking about topcoats or clear coat finishes on log homes.

Interested in extending the lifetime of your log home stain with less frequent re-staining? Enjoy the thought of easy log cleaning?  Then you should definitely consider protecting your log stain with a durable clear topcoat.  Adding a quality topcoat will extend the life of your stain, protect against moisture, and make log cleaning a breeze!

Let’s see why maintaining a good topcoat is vital to protecting your log home stain. On a microscopic level, the wood is made up of the carbohydrates lignin and cellulose.  When the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays hit the wood, they actually degrade the lignin, which is responsible for holding wood fibers together in the logs.  The breakdown in lignin results in discoloration and fading of the wood.  To protect against this, we recommend staining log homes.  The pigments in the stain protect the wood against the UV rays.  A clear topcoat protects the stain from harsh environmental conditions, allowing it to last longer and thus enhancing protection against UV rays.  Applying a topcoat on bare wood is essentially useless because there is no pigment to protect against UV exposure.

Did you know that without a topcoat, homeowners have to reapply stain on average every 2-3 years to keep their home looking great?  By maintaining a quality topcoat, you can extend the lifetime of the stain between 5-7 years or more! Of course, this depends on weather conditions and other environmental factors.
